Posted December 8, 2020

Errata discovered with Full Release of December 15, 2015, in the development of CSES IMD Phase 3 of December 8, 2020.

With the release of Phase 3 of the CSES Integrated Module Dataset (IMD), the CSES Secretariat identified some issues with the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015. Below, we provide a list of these issues that detail the problem, which users of CSES Module 2 in the future may wish to take note of concerning analyses. Issues requiring data change to CSES Module 2 will be incorporated in the next release of this data.

DATA CHANGES

  1. Variable B2011 (MAIN OCCUPATION): For Canada (2004) code “20. Professionals” is assigned to mid-managers in CSES Module 2. The correct ISCO-88 code for managers is “10. Legislators, senior officials and managers.” Further, “Special teaching” employees are coded as “30. Technicians and associated professionals” but should have been classified as “23. Teaching Professionals.” Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but for Canada (2004) have been corrected in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 (variable IMD2015_ISCO_88).

  1. Variable B2011 (MAIN OCCUPATION): For Japan (2004) code 90 is assigned to respondents without occupation in CSES Module 2. However, the respective respondents should have been set to “99. Missing”, as code 90 reflects the ISCO-88 category “Elementary occupations.” Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but for Japan (2004) have been corrected in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 (variable IMD2015_ISCO_88).

  1. Variable B2011 (MAIN OCCUPATION): For United States (2004) code “50. Service workers and shop and market sales workers” is assigned to sales professionals for finance and business services in CSES Module 2. The correct ISCO-88 code is “34. Other associate professionals,” as the ISCO-88 coding scheme employs the separate code 3410 for finance and sales associate professionals. Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but for United States (2004) have been corrected in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 (variable IMD2015_ISCO_88).

  1. Variable B2013 (EMPLOYMENT TYPE – PUBLIC OR PRIVATE): For Great Britain (2005) wild code (i.e., codes where the meaning of the classification is not ascertainable) 5 is included in the data which is not documented in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but have been set to “9. Missing” in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 for Great Britain (2005, variable IMD2017), as the meaning of the code could not be ascertained.

  1. Variable B2016 (SPOUSE: OCCUPATION): For Japan (2004) code 90 is assigned to spouses without occupation in CSES Module 2. However, the respective spouses should have been set to “99. Missing”, as code 90 reflects the substantial ISCO-88 category “Elementary occupations.” Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but for Japan (2004) have been corrected in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 (variable IMD2021_ISCO_88).

  1. Variable B2018 (SPOUSE: EMPLOYMENT TYPE – PUBLIC OR PRIVATE): For Great Britain (2005) wild code (i.e., codes where the meaning of the classification is not ascertainable) 5 is included in the data which is not documented in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. Data remain unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015 but for Great Britain (2005) have been set to “9. Missing” in the CSES IMD Release of December 8, 2020 (variable IMD2023), as the meaning of the code could not be ascertained.

  1. Variable B2026 (LANGUAGE USUALLY SPOKEN AT HOME): For Canada (2004) wild code (i.e., codes where the meaning of the classification is not ascertainable) 981 is included in the data which is not documented in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. Errata discovered with Full Release of December 15, 2015, in the development of CSES IMD Phase 2

With the release of the second phase of CSES Integrated Module Dataset (IMD), the CSES Secretariat identified some issues with CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015. Below, we provide a list of these issues that users of CSES Module 2 (release date: December 15, 2015) in the future may wish to take note of concerning analyses.

  • VARIABLE B2001 (AGE OF RESPONDENT): For Albania (2005), Germany (2002 – Mail-back study), Denmark (2001) and Norway (2001) there are few cases with respondents being younger than 18 years old (below voting age threshold in these countries) at the time of the CSES interview.

  • VARIABLE B3005_PR_1 (CURRENT ELECTION – VOTE CHOICE – PRESIDENT) and VARIABLE B3033 (WHICH PARTY DO YOU FEEL CLOSEST TO): For the Philippines (2004) these two variables have codes 80 and 82. There is no information about the meaning of these codes, neither in the data nor in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. In total, these two codes appear for three respondents in the Philippines (2004) study. This remains unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015, but these codes are recoded into “9999999. Missing” for the variables IMD3002_PR_1 (CURRENT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: VOTE CHOICE – ROUND 1) and IMD3005_3 (PARTY IDENTIFICATION: WHO) in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019.

  • VARIABLE B3006_1 (CURRENT ELECTION – VOTE CHOICE – LOWER HOUSE: PARTY LIST): For Sweden (2002) vote choice variable contains code 9. There is no information about the meaning of this code neither in the data nor in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. This code reports vote choice of 11 respondents in Sweden (2002). This remains unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015, but this code is recoded into “9999999. Missing” for the variable IMD3002_LH_PL (CURRENT LOWER HOUSE ELECTION: VOTE CHOICE – PARTY LIST) in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019.

  • VARIABLE B3018_1 (PREVIOUS ELECTION – VOTE CHOICE – LOWER HOUSE): For Denmark (2001) previous vote choice variable contains code 12. There is no information about the meaning of this code neither in the data nor in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. This code reports the vote choice of 2 respondents in Denmark (2001). This remains unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015, but this code is recoded into “9999999. Missing” for the variable IMD3004_LH_PL (PREVIOUS LOWER HOUSE ELECTION: VOTE CHOICE – PARTY LIST) in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019.

  • VARIABLE B3033 (WHICH PARTY DO YOU FEEL CLOSEST TO): For Poland (2001) variable B3033 (WHICH PARTY DO YOU FEEL CLOSEST TO) contains codes 12 and 18. There is no information about the meaning of these codes, neither in the data nor in the CSES Module 2 Codebook. This code reports party identification of 6 respondents in total. This remains unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015, but these codes are recoded into “9999999. Missing” for the variable IMD3005_3 (PARTY IDENTIFICATION: WHO) in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019.

  • VARIABLES B5004_F-I (PERCENT SEATS – UPPER HOUSE – PARTY F) are coded “Not applicable” for Switzerland (2003). However, since there are no parties F, G, H, and I in the Swiss 2003 dataset, these variables should be coded to missing. This remains unchanged in the CSES Module 2 Full Release of December 15, 2015, but this code is recoded into “999. Missing” for the variable IMD5004_F-I (Percent Seats – Upper House – Parties F-I) in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019.

  • VARIABLES B5038_1 (VOTES CAST – LOWER – 1ST SEGMENT) and B5038_3 (VOTES CAST – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) are code “1” for Australia (2004). Australia uses the Alternative Vote system (for Lower House) and a single-transferable vote form of proportional representation (for Upper House). Hence, voters vote for as many candidates as there are on the ballot. Thus, the total number of votes varies across electoral districts. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, these variables are coded “91. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Australia (2004).

  • VARIABLE B5038_2 (VOTES CAST – LOWER – 2ND SEGMENT) is coded “97. NOT APPLICABLE” for Norway (2001). However, the Norwegian Parliament comprises 169 seats in two tiers. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “91. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Norway (2001).

  • VARIABLE B5038_3 (VOTES CAST – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “1” for France (2002). Members of the Senate (French Upper House) are indirectly elected. Thus this code is not correct. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “97. NOT APPLICABLE” for France (2002).

  • VARIABLE B5038_3 (VOTES CAST – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “3” for Netherlands (2002). Members of the Senate (Dutch Upper House) are indirectly elected. Thus this code is not correct. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “97. NOT APPLICABLE” for Netherlands (2002).

  • VARIABLE B5038_3 (VOTES CAST – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “1” for the Philippines (2004). In Upper house elections in the Philippines, voters have one vote per candidate to be elected. This is in total 12 votes because half of the Senate is renewed at the single election. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “12” for the Philippines (2004).

  • VARIABLE B5038_3 (VOTES CAST – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “1” for Spain (2004). Each voter in Spain has three votes in 52 multi-member constituencies in Senate election. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “3” for Spain (2004).

  • VARIABLE B5039_1 (Voting procedure, Lower House – 1st segment) is coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for Brazil (2002). However, this coding is not correct because in Brazil each political party presents a list of candidates, and voters can cast a vote either for a candidate or for a party. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “4. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Brazil (2002).

  • VARIABLE B5039_1 (VOTING PROCEDURE – LOWER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for Netherlands (2002). However, voters in the Netherlands cast one vote for the list and for a candidate at the same time (matrix). In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “4. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Netherlands (2002).

  • VARIABLE B5039_1 (VOTING PROCEDURE – LOWER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for Switzerland (2003). But, Swiss voters can vote for a party list; endorse a specific candidate from a list; add candidates from other parties instead of a candidate of the list; delete candidates or vote twice for the same candidate. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “4. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Switzerland (2003).

  • VARIABLE B5039_2 (VOTING PROCEDURE – UPPER – 2ND SEGMENT) is coded “7. NOT APPLICABLE” for Mexico (2003). However, Mexico is a two-tier system because each voters’ vote is counted twice; once for the single-member district contest, and a second time for the regional PR contest. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for Mexico (2003).

  • VARIABLE B5039_2 (VOTING PROCEDURE – LOWER – 2ND SEGMENT) is coded “7. NOT APPLICABLE” for Norway (2001). Norway is a two-tier system and voters cast one single vote based on party lists. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for Norway (2001).

  • VARIABLE B5039_3 (VOTING PROCEDURE – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “4. OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for France (2002). Members of the Senate (French Upper House) are indirectly elected, thus this code is not correct. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, this variable is coded “7. NOT APPLICABLE” for France (2002).

  • VARIABLES B5039_3 (VOTING PROCEDURE – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) and B5039_4 (VOTING PROCEDURE – UPPER – 2ND SEGMENT) are coded “2. PARTY LISTS” for the first segment (tier) and “7. NOT APPLICABLE” for second segment (tier) for Mexico (2003). In Mexico, each vote in Upper house election is counted twice: once for the 3-seat multi-member districts contest and a second time for the national PR contest. In the last Full Release of CSES Module 2 dated December 15, 2015, this error persists. However, in the CSES IMD Release of October 17, 2019, these variables are coded “1. CANDIDATES” for IMD5017_3 (Voting procedure, Upper House – 1st segment(tier)) and “2. PARTY LISTS” for IMD5017_4 (Voting procedure, Upper House – 2nd segment(tier)) for Mexico (2003).

  • VARIABLE B5039_3 (VOTING PROCEDURE – UPPER – 1ST SEGMENT) is coded “ OTHER (SEE ELECTION STUDY NOTES)” for Netherlands (2002).

CSES Module 2 Data Set Errata

Posted: December 15, 2015

Updates made to the Full Release of December 15, 2015, since the Full Release of June 27, 2007

The files released on December 15, 2015 are an update to the prior release of June 27, 2007. Please do not use files from the previous release with files from the current release. Variable names and attributes, as well as the data, have sometimes been changed. However, no records were removed nor added. The respondent, country, and election study count remain the same.

With this release, the data and syntax file formats, and the codebook, have been improved to be more consistent with other CSES data releases. Furthermore, newly accompanying the release are datasets already prepared and ready to be immediately loaded into R, SAS, SPSS, and STATA. The dataset has also been made available in CSV format (albeit without metadata beyond variable names in the column headers).

Last, a number of corrections were made to known issues in the data and documentation. The CSES user community originally made us aware of many of these issues, and we thank you for that feedback. A list of some of the most important changes made is as follows, though this is not a comprehensive list of all changes:

    1. The numbers for turnout (B5006) of Kyrgyztan (2005), the Phillipines (2004), and the United States (2004) have been amended according to considerations presented in the CSES Technical Report ‘Electoral Turnouts Reported in Modules 1 and 2’ by Sebastian Netscher (October 2010).
    2. An election study note has been added to the codebook for Canada (2004), variable B3001_1, documenting the deviations of the question text from the CSES questionnaire.
    3. Variables B3042_1 through B3042_3 (POLITICAL PARTICIPATION) have been coded as ‘9. MISSING’ for South Korea (2004).
    4. All Irish cases were coded ‘000. NOT APPLICABLE’ for variable B4003 (NUMBER OF PARTY LISTS IN DISTRICT), as Ireland does not employ party lists.

If you have questions or concerns, e-mail us at [email protected] and we would be pleased to help.

Chile (2005) – B3045 (Left-Right – Self)

In the Chile 2005 portion of the CSES Module 2 dataset, variable B3045 (Left-Right – Self), is coded incorrectly. This is due to an error that occurred during CSES processing. As illustrated by the following table, too many cases fall on the Left side of the distribution. Please note that only the 1,200 Chilean cases are affected; no other cases are affected.

Code Frequency

Updates made to the Full Release of June 27, 2007, since the Advance Release of April 10, 2006

The CSES Module 2 data release of June 27, 2007 is the “Full Release,” which means that all election studies from CSES Module 2 are now included in the file. It is possible that new versions of the dataset will be made available in the future to correct any errors in the existing file; however, no new election studies will be added.

Preparation of the CSES Module 2 Full Release included extensive review of the individual election studies, the merged cross-national dataset, and the documentation. The improvements, updates, and additions made are too numerous to list. However, a few are noted here:

  1. Ten new election studies have been added to the file, bringing the final number of election studies to 41 in total. The studies added as of the Full Release are: Albania (2005), Chile (2005), Great Britain (2005) from the British Social Attitudes survey, Italy (2006), Kyrgyzstan (2005), Peru (2006), Romania (2004), Russia (2004), Slovenia (2004), and Taiwan (2004).
  2. The codebook introduction now provides a list of election studies that included Module 2 content, but that do not appear in the Full Release. Users who are interested in obtaining these datasets are encouraged to contact the principal investigators of each study. Among the list is an Internet study of Great Britain (2005) that appeared in the April 10, 2007 advance release, but was not included in the Full Release due to its use of a non-probability sample.
  3. The codebook introduction now includes a list of collaborators, Planning Committee members, and Secretariat staff that contributed to the production of CSES Module 2. The introduction also briefly discusses the issue of elections that are considered by some to be “not free,” but whose data appear in the CSES.
  4. The weights have been completed, and all derivate weights computed. An extended description of the weight variables has been provided in the codebook notes for the weight variable series, B1010-B1014. The storage formats for the weights have been reduced to four decimal places, as this allows adequate precision given the sample sizes in the dataset.
  5. The distribution files now include an SPSS Portable File, for users who prefer this method over using the provided SPSS syntax statements to read in the data.
  6. The CSES Module 2 Election Study Archive of original-language questionnaires, English-language questionnaires, Macro Reports, and Design Reports for each election study is now complete. The files can be downloaded from the CSES Module 2 page in the Data Center on the CSES website.

As a reminder, please do not use files from previous releases with files from the current release. Variable names and attributes, as well as the data, have sometimes been changed.

If you have questions or concerns, e-mail us at [email protected] and we would be pleased to help.

CSES Module 2 Advance Release: April 10, 2006 Version

Updates made to the Advance Release of April 10, 2006, since the Advance Release of June 29, 2005

The fourth advance release of April 10, 2006 contain additions, updates, and improvements to the third advance release of June 10, 2006. Please do not use files from previous releases with files from the current release. Variable names and attributes, as well as the data, have sometimes been changed.

Some of the updates were as follows:

  1. Six (6) election studies have been added: Canada 2004, Great Britain 2005, Japan 2004, Netherlands 2002, Philippines 2004 and Portugal 2005.
  2. The two errata (for Sweden 2002) from the previous advance release were applied.
  3. The documentation for variables B3013 and B3014 now contains a detailed accounting of the inconsistent use of the words “big” and “any” in the question text.
  4. Three new variables were added for Denmark 2001: B3009 (Most Important Issue), B5009 (Number of Portfolios After) and B5010 (Size of the Cabinet After). Also, variable B5085 (Head of Government – Policy Authorities) was updated for Denmark 2001.
  5. In the Switzerland 2003 data, the coding for variables B2025, B5037, B5048 and B5043 was correcred in a way suggested by the collaborator.
  6. In the B3029 variable series, a few respondents mentioned the same party more than once. The duplicate mention has been removed. This affected no more than 4-5 respondents in each of the following election studies: Germany 2002 (1st), Hong Kong 2004, Korea 2004, Spain 2004, and Sweden 2002.
  7. In the Portugal 2002 study we were able to add codes for federal structure (B5094 and B5095).
  8. In variable B5025 of the United States 2004 study, and in variable B5051 of the the Germany 2002 (1st) study, we adjusted the macro codes for consistency with other data.
  9. Some non-party codes in the Israel 2003 election study were changed from valid into missing values.
  10. Missing data assignments for B3041_g, B3041_h, and B3041_i for SAS have been corrected.
  11. Variable B1003 is now formatted as a numeric variable.
  12. Many election study notes were added throughout the codebook.
  13. Various additional issues were identified and fixed for data that already appeared in past releases. We are unable to detail all such improvements here.

If you have any questions, please e-mail us at [email protected] and we would be glad to assist you.

Sweden (2002) – B3038_E (Left-Right – Party E)

In the Sweden 2002 portion of the data file, variable B3038_E (Left-Right – Party E), which represents left-right ratings by respondents for the Left Party, is coded incorrectly. It was mistakenly coded the same as B3038_A. This is due to an error that occurred during CSES processing.

Please note that all 1,060 Swedish cases are affected; no other cases are affected.

The code for correcting the problem is found below. After the correction is applied, the frequency distribution for variable B3038_E should appear as follows:

B3038_E Left-Right - Party E
-----------------------------
Code Frequency
00. 361
01. 270
02. 182
03. 110
04. 33
05. 23
06. 3
07. 4
08. 1
09. 2
10. 2

98. 47

Total 1060

You may use the following code to correct the issue. The code is written for SPSS, so you will want to first modify it to fit the statistical package you are using.

Sweden (2002) – B3012 (Satisfaction with Democracy)

In 31 records in the Sweden (2002) portion of the data file, variable B3012 (Satisfaction with Democracy) is coded incorrectly as “3” instead of “4”. This is due to an error that occurred during CSES processing.

The following SPSS code can be used to correct the error, after modification to fit the statistical software in use:

Updates made to the Advance Release of June 29, 2005, since the Advance Release of December 15, 2004

The third advance release of June 29, 2005 contain additions, updates, and improvements to the second advance release of December 15, 2004. Please do not use files from previous releases with files from the current release. Variable names and attributes, as well as the data, have sometimes been changed.

Some of the updates were as follows:

  1. Ten (10) election studies have been added: Australia 2004, Belgium 2003, Brazil 2002, Denmark 2001, Finland 2003, Hong Kong 2004, Iceland 2003, Korea 2004, Spain 2004, and the United States 2004.
  2. Macro data are now present for all election studies in the dataset.
  3. We applied the June 23, 2005 erratum titled “Germany (2002) – Macro Report: B5046, B5050”.
  4. We forgot to apply the January 7, 2005 erratum titled “Sweden (2002) – B3012 (Satisfaction with Democracy)” so you will want to make this correction if you are using variable B3012.
  5. The documentation has been significantly updated.
  6. Various issues were identified and fixed for data that already appeared in past releases. We are unable to detail all such improvements here.

If you have any questions, please e-mail us at [email protected] and we would be glad to assist you.

CSES Module 2 Advance Release: December 15, 2004 Version

CSES Module 2 Data Set Errata
Posted: June 23, 2005

Germany (2002) – Macro Report: B5046, B5050

We have been informed that for the Germany (2002) studies, variable B5046 should be coded “5. No”. Consequently, B5050 should be recoded to “0. Not applicable; No Apparentement”. A replacement Macro report for Germany (2002) has been issued.

The correction can be made to the dataset by using code similar to the following:

If B1004="DEU12002" or B1004="DEU22002" then B5046=5.
If B1004="DEU12002" or B1004="DEU22002" then B5050=0.

Updates made to the Advance Release of December 15, 2004, since the Advance Release of May 1, 2003

The files released on December 15, 2004 contain additions, updates, and improvements to the first advance release of May 1, 2003. Please do not use files from the May 1, 2003 release with files from the December 15, 2004 release. Variable names and attributes, as well as the data, have sometimes been changed.

Some of the updates were as follows:

  1. Eight (8) election studies were added: Czech Republic 2002, a second Germany 2002 study (a mail-back study), Israel 2003, Mexico 2003, Norway 2001, Sweden 2002, Switzerland 2003, and Taiwan 2001.
  2. Macro variables were created and data coded for all election studies for which a Macro Report was available.
  3. The documentation has been significantly updated.
  4. During processing, some issues were identified and fixed for data that already appeared in the first advance release. We are unable to detail all such improvements here. However, some examples are:
    • In variable B5002 (PERCENT SEATS – LOWER HOUSE) for Hungary, percent of seats won by PARTY A was attributed to PARTY B. Additionally, the entry for PARTY A reported percent of seats obtained by the coalition of PARTY B and PARTY F. These issues have been corrected in the current release.
    • In variable B3014 (WHO PEOPLE VOTE FOR MAKES A DIFFERENCE) for Germany and Hungary, the scales were reversed. This has been corrected in the current release.
