Dear Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) User Community,

In order to begin the process of identifying a topic for CSES Module 5, a Task Force has been established, consisting of Sara Binzer Hobolt (London School of Economics and Political Science), Radoslaw Markowski (Polish Academy of Sciences) and Nicolas Sauger (Sciences Po).

The mission of the CSES Module 5 Task Force is to identify gaps in the research that CSES Module 5 might address, and canvass possible substantive themes for the new module. The purpose of this note is to ask you, as a member of the CSES user community, to suggest possible themes and questions that the Task Force should investigate for CSES Module 5.

While we will accept initial suggestions and ideas in any format, as many of the following items as possible should ideally be addressed in proposals:
1. Title of proposal
2. A brief overview of the proposal
3. A brief discussion of the theory and broader literature that the proposal would contribute to
4. A description of the module design and questions that might be included
5. Specific mention of any survey or macro variables from past CSES modules that would need to be retained as part of the proposal
6. A summary and/or links to previous national or comparative studies and findings
7. A brief discussion of methodological issues, for instance regarding equivalence across countries
8. A CV for each of the proposer or proposers

Please direct your proposals for consideration by the CSES Module 5 Task Force to the following email address: [email protected]

We have created a Microsoft Word document in which you can enter your proposal, if you wish, though it is not required to be used. The file can be downloaded here: CSES Module 5 Proposal Form

Proposals received on or before August 31, 2013 will be presented for feedback and discussion at a November meeting of the CSES Planning Committee, and later at a Plenary Session of CSES Collaborators that is anticipated to be held in 2014.

Data collection for CSES Module 5 is anticipated to begin sometime in 2016. Please be aware that proposals, design, and question wording may be adapted and modified by the CSES Planning Committee, in coordination with the original proposers.

Thank you in advance for your ideas, and for your support of the CSES project.

About the Project: CSES is a collaborative program of research among election study teams from around the world. Participating countries include a common module of survey questions in their post-election studies. The resulting data are deposited along with voting, demographic, district and macro variables. The studies are then merged into a single, free, public dataset for use in comparative study and cross-level analysis. For more information about the project, please visit its website at: www.cses.org
