Delayed Release of the Module 1: 1996-2001 CSES Merged Micro-Macro Dataset

We regret to inform you that the release of the merged Micro-Macro Comparative Studies of Electoral Systems Module 1: 1996-2001 datafile has been delayed, but is expected to be ready for release by the end of August. We sincerely hope that this delay has not caused any inconvenience.

With this release, we approach the conclusion of the first module of the CSES project (note, there will likely be a final release that incorporates data from countries that have only recently conducted post-election studies using the Module 1 battery, in particular Belgium, Iceland and Russia). Because of this, we are anxious to ensure that outstanding questions and concerns have been resolved, and that all macro and district level data have been incorporated into the datafile. As noted in the release memo for the stand-alone Macro datafile, the Merged Macro-Micro dataset will include: A) survey data and demographic variables; B) matched district level data, including electoral returns and turnout data; and C) matched macro-level data about the election, electoral rules and regime type of each country included in our sample.

The complete Module 1 datafile will include data from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United States. We are currently awaiting depositions or advice regarding the appropriate incorporation of these data from several of these countries, and respectfully request that our collaborators respond to our outstanding questions as soon as possible.

As soon as these data have been processed, the complete datafile, and all supporting documentation will be available for downloading from the CSES website: (http://www.cses.org). We will be sure to inform you at that time.

CSES Public Meeting at APSA

The CSES Secretariat invites you to attend the public meeting on the CSES project, that will be held in conjunction with the APSA conference in San Francisco this fall. At this meeting, plans for the second CSES module and future directions of the project will be addressed. Also, we are very interested your feedback on the first version of the CSES system and district level data. This meeting will be held on Friday, August 31, at 5:30 p.m. in Park 55, the Milan room.
