CSES Secretariat

The CSES Secretariat comprises the central staffing and operations for the project, under the leadership of the chair of the CSES Planning Committee.

Since June 2011, the CSES Secretariat has been a collaboration between the GESIS - Liebniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Germany
and the University of Michigan's Center for Political Studies in the United States.

CSES Secretariat: Current Core Research Staff

Kathrin B. Busch. Kathrin is a data processing specialist and Ph.D student in our Cologne office at GESIS. She works primarily on the harmonization and documentation of the CSES' micro data. Other responsibilities for the project include consistency checking, training of new staff and student assistants, maintaining the CSES Bibliography, and responding to inquiries from the research community. Kathrin's current research interests are voters' knowledge of parties' left-right positions and its consequences for voting behavior.

David Howell. David is Director of Studies for the CSES and Associate Director of the Center for Political Studies at the University of Michigan. His interests include public opinion, cross-national research, survey methodology, and developing local research capacity in international settings.

Stephen Quinlan. Stephen is Project Manager at the CSES and Senior Researcher at GESIS in Mannheim, Germany. He is responsible for project management and works in conjunction with the CSES Planning Committee on developing project goals and questionnaire development. His other responsibilities include macro data, data documentation and analysis, and quality assurance procedures. His research focuses on comparative electoral behavior, public opinion, and the impact of social media on politics. Steve received his PhD in political science from University College Dublin and his research focuses on electoral participation, comparative electoral behavior, and social media's impact on politics.

Christian Schimpf. Christian is a data processing specialist. He is responsible for data management, documentation, and archiving. He prepares syntax/code files, manages data sets, is involved in the creation of enhanced and cumulative datsets, and prepares micro-data components of CSES data for distribution. Christian is also a PhD candidate at the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at the University of Mannheim. His research interestes include populism, voting behavior, public opinion formation, and quantitative methods.

Hannah Schwarz. Hannah is Data Processing Specialist for the CSES based at our Cologne office at Gesis. She works on all stages of the dataset processing, from quality assessment of the incoming data to preparation for archiving of the cross-national datasets. She is responsible for creating syntax/code files for cleaning, harmonizing and checking complex datasets, as well as for dataset documentation. Furthermore, she follows up on inquiries from the user community and supports the work of the CSES planning committee.

Bojan Todosijevic. Bojan is a social scientist who has been affiliated with the CSES for a decade. Over time, he has been involved in various tasks for CSES, including processing micro and macro data, data preparation and documentation, data integration and preparation of the release files. He contributed to the development of several CSES modules. Currently, he is mostly involved in processing the macro data, and conducting quality assurance procedures. His research focuses on psychological underpinnings of political attitudes and behavior, and on politics in Serbia. Bojan received his Ph.D. in political science from Central European University, Budapest. His permanent employment is at the Institute of social sciences, Belgrade, Serbia.
